Artist's Comments

A drawing done for a contest on Worth1000.com, which is a pretty fun place to go. I frequent the Multimedia Contests which are the drawing and animation contests. It's a nice place to go when you're looking for a bit of exercise, but you don't really know what you want to draw. I've found that contests have provided some nice incentive to get to work.

9"x12", #0 Rapidograph on Borden & Riley Paper for Pens, roughly 12 hours.

I really like your style. It has a cool late 19th century look to it.

Not a comparrison, but do I sense a little David Levine in this pic? Top notch and creepity.

I don't mind such a kind comparison, but I'll admit I had to look up David Levine. I love his work, yet never knew his name. To this day, I can close my eyes, and picture a drawing of Al Sharpton he'd done for Playboy around ten years ago. I'd be a liar if I said I wasn't at least a little influenced by his hatching techniques; loose, vibrant, almost hap-hazard seeming, and yet measured and practiced. He's truly a master.

I'm glad you liked the piece, by the way. Thank you.

The general term is cross-hatching, or just hatching. It's a technique developed in the early days of print, as a way to create gradient values with the pure black and white media of printing. While it's certainly not the only way to create shading with a pen, I've always liked it because it's fast and active, and really quite versatile.

Thanks for the visit, and compliment. I hope to see more of your drawings soon!
